Will 2013 be year of the death of the metal key?

Will 2013 be year of the death of the metal key?

After 1100 long years, 2013 is shaping up to be the year of the fall of the metal key. The old trusty metal key has served us well over the years, but like all things it must come to an end. Dont be sad for the metal key - hey 1100 years is a good run. There has been an alternative to metal keys for about 30 years now, the key card, but until now, key cards have been too expensive, difficult to install, and difficult and expensive to maintain. There is a new evolution in keys, its called digital keys! You use digital keys with your smartphone.

Is the metal key immortal?
Sure if something has lasted for thousands of years then it should live forever right? Is the key really worthy of eternal life? Well to answer that question, let's have a look at what the metal key has done for you over the years-it has kept you and your belongings safe, right? OK what else? Is that about all the positives? The metal key is not as safe as we've been lead to believe for example see article here about lock snapping from Yorkshire police

What is the duty of the metal key?

If the metal can no longer perform its duty of keeping you and your belongings safe, then logic says we need to find an alternative. Can you think of what else the metal key has done for you? I'm sure everyone can think of at least one occasion when the metal key featured heavily - how about a lock out?Metal keys will never solve the problem of lockouts.

There is an alternative to metal keys, its called digital keys.

A number of leading lock manufacturers and tech start up companies are developing smartphone digital keys and corresponding locks. In the next edition of The Digital Keys blog, we'll explore some of the options available in the marketplace right now, and what's coming soon in 2013.
