What
Annandale Hostel, Sydney Trial

By LEAPIN and Kaba Ilco
Where
Downtown Sydney, Australia
When
March 2012 – July 2012
Details
A former retirement home was converted to a 32 room hostel and made available for short to medium term accommodation for backpackers and students
Why
Digital keys were a perfect platform for the property owners, as within a few short weeks after the sale of the property as a retirement home, it was renovated and made available for rent to the public with no onsite management/reception desk required. The property was earmarked for demolition, and it would’ve sat vacant for this period, unless digital keys was quickly and easily installed
Description
Guests viewed, booked and paid for their accommodation online, before having their digital keys automatically texted and emailed to them. At checkout time their digital keys no longer worked. The digital keys solution was integrated with a property management system and Paypal for processing payments.
Results
The trial brought a profit in the 5 month period of over $300K to its owners, which without digital keys, would’ve probably have lied vacant, and brought no profits to the owners. Results from a survey to guests were encouraging. For example 88% of respondents wanted to be offered digital keys in other accommodation in Sydney, and 92% stated that they believe digital keys to be the way of the future.
WIIFM
The trial showed that with digital keys any property can quickly and easily be converted to short term accommodation without the need for onsite management or even off site management. Digital keys software managed the property.
