Digital Keys in your smartstrap on your Pebble smartwatch

What a week it has been for the Pebble smartwatch, NFC and digital keys.

In one week, Pebble's new 'Time smartwatch' has become the most "funded" project in Kickstarter history. As of Friday 6th March, Pebble has taken over $16 million in pre-orders. The watch project generated more than $9 million in pre-orders on its first day alone.

Pebble also announced a unique modular hardware accessory system for their smartwatch called "smartstraps". According to Pebble, the smartstraps are interchangeable wristbands that can contain electronics and sensors that interface directly with apps running on the watch. "Now everything is possible - GPS, heart rate monitor, battery extension and NFC, you name it!" says the company.

We're excited by the idea of NFC being in the smartstrap. NFC in the smartstrap means that you can store all of your keys right there in the watch band. Yes, in the smartstrap you will be able to store your car keys, your house keys, your garage keys, the keys to your office, the keys to your University, the keys to your hotel, the keys to 'you name it'. The digital keys in the smartstrap can be permanent or set to work for only a limited time period. And the other thing is, the smartstrap with NFC will never need power or need to be charged.

You will never have to fumble with keys ever again. You will never have to make complicated arrangements to pick up or drop off keys to access any property ever again. You'll never have to carry a set of bulky keys and keyrings or keyfobs even again. To open your door, you'll simply be able to hold up the smartstrap on your wrist to the NFC reader inside a NFC lock, and the door will unlock and in you go.

Some hotels now like Starwood already enable you to open your door with your smartphone, but there is always the worry that your phone will run out of batteries and you will be locked out. No worries anymore with the smartstrap. NFC in your smartstrap also means you won't need to take out your smartphone and hit any buttons on apps to open your doors every time you approach a door.

So how does it work? Using our Digital Keys app (available now here in the Play store), you'll be able to send your digital key (in the form of an encrypted code) to the smartstrap on only one occasion, and then you can start unlocking doors by simply holding your smartstrap within 5 centimetres of the door (with corresponding NFC smart locks).

Or even better, you can simply flick the watch band over the Pebble smartwatch face with our Digital Keys app open, and transfer the digital key that way (see image below).
Transfer your digital key, in the form of an encrypted code, to your Pebble smartstrap, using the Digital Keys app on your Pebble smartwatch.

Are you looking forward to dumping all your metal keys and metal fobs, and keycards once and for all, and using your smartstrap to open doors? We are!
